King of Fighters (KOF) MUGEN Characters & Games

The King of Fighters is SNK's 3-on-3 fighting series, and it is one of the deepest wells in MUGEN. People look for KOF MUGEN characters because the sprite library is huge, the team format maps cleanly onto MUGEN's Turns mode, and a lot of the best conversions are Capcom vs SNK-style edits of those same KOF sprites.

This King of Fighters MUGEN hub is what you can download from MugenDB today: 19 characters grouped by KOF team, two full games (KOF Wing and KOF Zillion), and Duracelleur's KOF Anthology screenpack. Every name is a link to the listing; the Download on that listing goes to the author.

Best picks

Most accurate — Kyo Kusanagi (Jmorphman). If someone asks for a KOF MUGEN character that actually plays like Kyo, this is the one. PotS-level conversion, Kusanagi mode, custom AI. Start here, then add Vice or Joe from the same author if you want a team that feels consistent.

Most fun — King of Fighters Wing (2diyer). Skip building a roster. Wing is a full King of Fighters MUGEN download with a select screen already done. Better first hour than dumping 19 chars into a blank 1.0 install.

Best to play in a custom team — Terry Bogard (Memo). CvS2 Terry with a move list that works in Turns. Pair with Andy (Infinite) and Joe (Jmorphman) and you have a Fatal Fury team that isn't three palettes of the same guy.

KOF setup tips

3-on-3 in MUGEN. Options → Team mode → Turns (not Simultaneous). Turns is the KOF rule: one fighter at a time, next teammate comes in when they drop. Simultaneous is Marvel-style tag and will not feel like King of Fighters.
Screenpack and lifebars. Use KOF Anthology for the menus. It is built to hold a huge roster. For bars, pick a 3-on-3 / SNK-style lifebar from the lifebars listings so the HUD matches Turns instead of a 1v1 bar.
1.0 vs 1.1. Most of these chars are M.U.G.E.N 1.0 conversions. 1.1 can reject older .def files or crash on palettes. If a char dies on boot in 1.1, try 1.0 or Ikemen GO, which reads a lot of 1.0 work. Full games (Wing, Zillion) should be run as their own folder, not pasted into a random 1.1 install.

FAQ

Are these official SNK characters?

No. They are fan conversions for M.U.G.E.N. MugenDB does not host the files; each listing points at the author's download. SNK still owns The King of Fighters.

Where can I download a full KOF MUGEN game?

KOF Wing and KOF Zillion are the two full games on this site. Open the listing and use the Download there. That is the King of Fighters MUGEN download path; this hub does not mirror the zips.

Which MUGEN version do I need?

Plan on M.U.G.E.N 1.0 or Ikemen GO. A few listings are HD edits that also run on 1.0+. If something fails on 1.1, that is expected for older KOF conversions.

How do I make KOF teams in MUGEN?

Set Team mode to Turns. In select.def, either pick three chars at the select screen or write a team of three on one line. Anthology's 680-slot select is there if your roster is huge.

Why are some of these labelled Capcom vs SNK?

A lot of the best KOF MUGEN characters are CvS-style edits of KOF sprites. They still belong on a King of Fighters team. We keep the CvS label and add king-of-fighters so this hub, Related and the label archive all find them.
